SNAANA Rose Water vs Common Rose Water
But over the years with the kind of commercialization and competition to make it more cost-effective etc – the rose water has been segregated as a cosmetic grade, food grade etc. And this segregation and toothless law ( Laws have not been amended at the pace chemicals have made their way to different skincare & food products) do not clearly differentiate between pure rose water and adulterated rose water for the consumer. Hence chances are that the pure rose water bottle you recently purchased could be chemically prepared rose water.
Making of rose water
Rosewater making is technically known as making rose hydrosol. At SNAANA we do not make rose oil because we make use of the rosa centifolia, also known as desi gulab grown in the foothills of himalayas. As per research this very rose breed contains significant water soluble nutrients making the best quality nutrient rich rose water with negligible or needle-like suspended rose oil difficult to collect. Rather the difficult to collect hydrophilic rose oil helps in preserving the water for a longer period and makes it highly therapeutic when applied, inhaled or consumed.
We undertake distillation only to produce rose water. Making 1 litre of rose essential oil would need tones of roses to produce pure steam distilled oil. Hence, no less priced than gold. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be termed as the life force (pran) of a plant/rose in a bottle. That is the reason essential oils when applied, inhaled or consumed works as a therapy for the body. But SNAANA does not make rose oil and its products as the price of a rose oil product would be similar to buying gold for your skin.
While true rose hydrosol/water is far lighter and its undiluted use can deliver benefits equivalent to the product made with rose oil.
Rose water prepared via steam distillation is transparent and has a faint aroma of fresh roses. Usually, rose water found in the market has a strong aroma of roses as it is made through adding synthetically developed rose (fragrance) to water in place of using the rose flower.
In other words, rose water often sold in the market is made without using the rose. Though this may sound weird but it is a fact. Because many popular brands contain chemicals in the form of preservatives or additives, there are a few things to look for while buying genuine rose water.
- Steam distilled
- Edible
- Made with desi gulab/ rose, no hybrid
- 100% chemical free
- 100% preservative free too
- Packed in a glass amber bottle only
A steam distilled rose water does not need a preservative at all and it easily stays without preservative for about a year to 5 years when stored properly.
Rose water making does not need a preservatives
At SNAANA, making rose water is a natural technique resembling rain water process where the steam passes through the rose petals and on rising up, it comes in contact with the condenser turning into droplets of water. These steamed water droplets are rich with rose nutrients making it the best edible rose water suitable for use in skin, food and health. And the rose water prepared through steam distillation when stored without any dilution need no preservative at all and it can last for 5 years when stored properly in a sterilised glass container and kept away from contamination.

Well, rosewater is derived directly from rose petals. And it takes about 1 kg of fresh and clean rose petals to produce 100 ml of rosewater. Roses, although are available everywhere for making nutrient-rich rose water, desi organically grown rose petals should be plucked and steam distilled the same day. Why can’t a bottle of rose water at home serve different functions from being a food ingredient to a skin toner?
This question led us to further research into the authenticity of rosewater being sold in the market. We realised that in modern times, various manufacturers have devised ways to cater to the growth in demand and competition by just adding rose fragrance in distilled water with added preservatives to give it a good shelf life. If extracted through the right method, 1 kg of fresh roses can give us around 100ml of rosewater, making the real nutrient rich rosewater very expensive as compared to market available ones.
These cheap paraffin and alcohol based fragrances and rose waters have forced many traditional distilleries to closure. So, often when you buy a bottle of rose water – You may be sold a synthetically prepared rose water or rose water adulterated with distilled water, fragrance, solublizer and preservatives in the name of Pure or Natural Rose water.
Synthetically prepared perfume or fragranced/scented water or oils are harmful for the human body when applied or inhaled. These can not only irritate the skin but can cause health concerns in other vital organs in our body. Fragrances are cheap toxic ingredients that are making a big way to skin care products, diffuser oils, attars etc.
Synthetic rose oil too is extensively used in many products that we buy in our day-to-day life. Pure rose oil or any other herb oil called essential oil are expensive and highly therapeutic. But these oils are mimicked in a lab and produced synthetically making our bodies vulnerable.
And that’s the reason we at SNAANA raise our voice against these harmful and substandard products which are sold in the name of pure, organic, real, plant-derived, dermatologically tested, etc. Manufacturers and retailers use these words on these substandard products to lure the customer on these names as there is no clear definition in law on usage of such alluring words.
We, at SNAANA, have a firm belief that rose petals can be chewed, then why can’t the rosewater which is made for skincare or beauty purposes be used to drink?
And hence a bottle of rose water at home should be an all purpose rose water.
And that’s when we at SNAANA indulged ourselves in exploring the true purity with right ancient techniques where we work closely with rose cultivation farmers in the regions of Uttrakhand & Uttar Pradesh to prepare pure rose water through traditional technique of steam distillation to bring unadulterated rose elixir to you.
To get the best quality of water, the roses are plucked early in the morning before sunrise as that is when they are most nutritious. The process of steam distillation which is similar to our earth’s rain process removes the impurities, bacteria and any other kind of contamination, giving the rosewater a shelf life of more than 1 year if stored in cool place and sterile containers.
