The prolonged night after night inability to sleep for adequate quantity & quality time in a day is called insomnia.
Insomnia can bring with it weakness, lack of energy, difficulty in concentrate, forgetfulness, daytime sleepiness, feel of tiredness on waking up and waking up multiple times during the sleep time etc.
There are multiple causes of insomnia like stress, anxiety, alcohol, lifestyle disorders like poor sleeping habits and eating habits, aches in body muscles and joints, drug abuse/medication etc.
It’s important to know the cause of insomnia to treat it. Insomnia can be a disease itself or may be the side effect of another disease like heartburn, arthritis, asthma etc.
Insomnia is often not difficult to treat; it needs determination which calls for control over the mind to mend the lifestyle disorders. Here are a few tips that can help you get a good sound sleep-
- Stick to a regular sleep time and rising time. Our bodies are biologically accustomed to sleep during night time and work during daytime. Hence stick to the time to fall into the sleep pattern. Before going to bed, pen down the thoughts to relax/clear the mind with thoughts that don’t let you sleep for hours after being in the bed.
- Do not nap during the day.
- Eat healthy and on time.
- Walk/exercise every day
- Eat at least 2 hours before bedtime.
- Keep yourself busy during the day time.
Note – Unable to sleep for one or two nights due to change in place, weather or illness is just sleeplessness and not insomnia.
A determined control over the body and mind is essential during the transition from inadequate sleep to ample quality sleep nights. Products like essential oils, herb waters, green tea can help induce sleep and ease transition periods.
