Immunity – an overview

The word Immunity has been very much in focus the past couple of months post the break out of pandemic coronavirus.

What is immunity?

The dictionary definition of the word immunity says – the quality or state of being immune, especially a condition of being able to resist a particular disease especially through preventing a pathogenic microorganism or by counteracting the effects of its products.

So in other words, it’s the immune system that creates a defense and protects the body from risk oriented invasions. Hence a healthy & well functioning immune system is vital for survival.

How to build immunity?

Physical activity, right nutrition and of course a connect with nature are the ways to a healthy lifestyle that contributes to building immunity in the body.  The better the defense system of the body against diseases, the higher the immunity is and hence lower will be the risk of falling sick.

Physical activity – A moderate regular exercise is helpful to strengthen the system as it can help flush bacteria out of the body reducing the chance of getting cold, cough and other illness. Exercise contributes to healthy cardio health, balanced blood pressure, control body weight and improved circulation making the cells & tissues work efficiently. Exercise is one of the important pillars of a healthy body.

Nutrition – Adequate and appropriate quality nutrition intake is very important for the optimal functioning of the immune system. An apt working immune system needs different levels of energy at different times to protect the body. For example – during the time of infection, an active immune system increases the demand of the energy  to initiate an effective response against invaders – pathogens. Thus it’s the nutrition that backs up white blood cells to perform with the best immunological outcomes.  And therefore it is important to keep the body free from any deficiency with the right nutrition-rich food.  Eating too much nutrition too is bad especially when it turns you obese. Obesity can impair the body’s immune functioning.

The immune system functioning in the body changes with age, thus important to ensure right intake as per the need of the time.  Vaccination too is one of the ways to immune the body against many known diseases however it’s not possible to make vaccines for many illnesses because of hundreds of varieties of virus causing the same illness and with strain changing its form frequently.

Connect with Nature – Nature can heal anything and everything. All that’s needed is time off the busy schedule to revive the body holistically – bringing sync between the body, mind and soul.  Our super busy lifestyles have created a disconnect with nature.
